First Grade Readiness
Everything that happens in your child’s life in the early years has a lasting impact on their future potential. One of the most important predictors of a child’s academic and future success is the ability to read by the end of third grade. First grade readiness is critically important because of early literacy instruction.
In March of 2023, the Alabama State Board of Education adopted an addition to the Alabama Administrative Code requiring local school boards to ensure students being enrolled in or promoted to first grade demonstrate first grade readiness by the successful completion of kindergarten or otherwise demonstrating first grade entry readiness on an assessment of essential developmental and physical skills. Schools regularly report the progress of students as they proceed through their formal educational experiences. In addition, report cards are issued at the end of each quarter. Families are notified when additional instruction and interventions are provided.
Autauga County Schools offers the following resources for students retained in kindergarten who do not meet the promotion requirements.
- Intensive Reading Intervention
- Summer Reading Camp
- After-School Tutoring
- Frequent progress monitoring to help ensure students are on track to meet grade-level standards
